ARE THE HOURS SHOWING ON A TACOMETER IMPORTANT WHEN LOOKING TO BUY A TRACTOR?

The hours showing on a tach seem to be a big deciding factor to customers looking to buy a tractor.  The hours also affect the price range on a specific tractor. A lot of customers that are looking to buy a tractor are not comfortable with higher hours. Therefore the question arises: Is buying a tractor with higher hours a good idea or should I try to find a tractor with low hours?

Here are some things to consider before you make your final decision.
  • If the tractor has low hours
    • was it looked after well
    • was it maintained on a regular basis (oil changed, antifreeze checked and changed etc.)
    • were all small problems fixed properly on a regular basis
    • was it kept clean and inside
    • are the ORIGINAL hours?  (or was the tach changed or reset)

  • If the tractor has higher hours
    • was it looked after well
    • was it maintained regularly (oil changed, antifreeze checked and changed etc.)
    • were all small problems fixed properly on a regular basis was it kept clean and inside
    • are the hours original
    • what work has been done to the tractor over the years

The above questions make a big difference on which tractor may be a better buy. Here is are some comparisons:
  • A tractor with low hours is less affordable then a tractor with higher hours.
  • A tractor with low hours that was not looked after or maintained may be in worse condition then a tractor with high hours that was well looked after
  • A tractor with low hours that has not been used regularly may cause problems sooner then a working tractor with higher hours
  • A tractor that has had engine or transmission work done may last longer then an original low hour tractor since those parts are rebuilt
The amount of hours on a 40 year old New Generation I or II should really not be the deciding factor when buying a tractor like these. They may both give you problems OR they may both last for a long time before they need any work done

Is there are difference between the electronic tach and mechanical tach?
